Basnuevo's new paintings revisit and recollect the "sacred" places she has visited…from the Cathedral of Santa Clara, Cuba, to pre-historic caves in northern Spain. Works range from a very large scale to small, intimate works built up with transparent wash, transfers, and tonal variations of paint, on canvas, panel, and paper. The results are personal views reflecting chaos and order, and divisions and social categorizations found in everyday life from an elevated point of view that conveys both conflict and harmonic coherence.
Luisa Basnuevo was born in Cuba and came to the United States via Spain. Received a B.F.A from Florida International University and a M.F.A. from Yale University School of Art in 1991. Her paintings have been exhibited in museums and galleries in the United States and abroad, including the Southeastern Center of Contemporary Art in Winston-Salem, North Carolina and the Musée du Luxembourg in Paris, France. Her work is included in public and corporate collections throughout Florida, including those of the Pérez Art Museum Miami, the John and Mable Ringling Museum of Art in Sarasota, and the Polk Museum of Art in Lakeland. She is the recipient of fellowships from the National Endowment for the Arts/Southeastern Arts Federation, the South Florida Consortium, and the Division of Cultural Affairs, Florida Department of State. Luisa Basnuevo lives and works in Miami, Florida.
